Welcome back to the Mental Mettle Podcast! In Episode 103, host Matt Thomann sits down with Tyson McFeeters, a 17-year-old whose story of resilience, faith, and determination will leave you inspired to tackle your own challenges head-on. Tyson’s journey is a powerful example of what it means to “stand up” in the face of life’s toughest moments-and how a positive mindset can turn even the worst days into opportunities for growth.

From Motocross Dreams to a New Path

Tyson’s story begins with a childhood dream: becoming a professional motocross rider. His family moved from Illinois to California to support his passion, and by age 15, Tyson was already making a name for himself in freestyle motocross competitions. But just as his career was taking off, everything changed.

A tragic accident-caused not by a motocross stunt, but by a car drifting into his lane on a dirt road-left Tyson with a severe spinal cord injury. In an instant, the life he’d known was upended. But Tyson’s response to this adversity is what truly sets him apart.

Faith, Positivity, and the Will to Walk Again

After the accident, Tyson faced a long and uncertain recovery. He describes a near-death experience that deepened his faith and gave him an unwavering belief that he will walk again. Rather than dwell on what he lost, Tyson chose to focus on what he could still achieve. He stopped going to doctors who told him “no” and instead poured his energy into rehabilitation, mindset, and hope.

“It’s just my attitude… I don’t go to doctors anymore because I don’t like being told no. I think it’s just… my attitude is just fantastic.”

Tyson’s positivity is infectious. He openly shares how his faith and mindset have been crucial in helping him adapt, persevere, and find new purpose.

Discovering Jiu-Jitsu and Building New Strength

One of the most remarkable parts of Tyson’s journey is his unexpected foray into Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Despite using a wheelchair, Tyson trains in the gi, mastering techniques and competing against able-bodied athletes. Jiu-jitsu has become a source of strength, humility, and community for him-a new arena where he continues to challenge himself and grow.

“Most of your work you do… do you almost everything in the gi? Yeah, I do all gi work. So you like that lapel stuff… using somebody else’s clothes as a weapon. Yeah, I do too.”

Founding Stand Up to SCI: Helping Others Rise

Tyson’s journey didn’t stop with his own recovery. Motivated to help others facing spinal cord injuries, he founded Stand Up to SCI, an initiative dedicated to supporting and inspiring those with similar challenges. Through this platform, Tyson shares his story, offers resources, and builds a community of hope for others navigating life after spinal cord injury.

“I just want to help people… I want to show them that you can turn the worst days into the best thing that happened to you.”

Lessons in Resilience: How to Turn the Worst Days Into the Best

Tyson’s story is a testament to the power of perspective. He doesn’t shy away from the pain or difficulty of his journey, but he refuses to let it define him. Instead, he chooses to see every setback as an opportunity for growth, faith, and connection.

Key takeaways from Tyson’s journey:

  • Adversity can be a catalyst for personal growth and new purpose.
  • Faith and mindset are powerful tools for overcoming even the toughest obstacles.
  • Community and connection-whether through sports, family, or advocacy-are vital for healing.
  • Helping others can give new meaning to your own challenges.
